Barbara Eileen Gordon is a fictional character that is best known as Batgirl. She first appeared in Detective Comics #359 which was published on April 1967. She is the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon and she has a twin brother, James Gordon Jr.
She was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino, who also designed her original costume. The character was introduced as a female counterpart to Batman and Robin, whom she eventually went on to join under the name Batgirl.
Her origin story relates that she has a lifelong interest in Gotham City crime-fighting since witnessing her father's abduction when she was just a child; her father would later be rescued by Batman and Robin, who had been alerted by Barbara's quick thinking.
